Yes, yes, and YES. Not only is it safe, but it is recommended.
There are numerous studies out there showing that lower back pain is extremely common with pregnancy, and many more showing chiropractic’s efficacy and results. In fact, two such studies were cited in my recent Corvallis “Be Better Tip” found at the Vertebrata Chiropractic blog here: http://www.vertebratachiropractic.com/blog/
Pregnancy is a wondrous time in a woman’s life where she undergoes many changes in order to prepare the life inside of her to enter the world. These changes are not always easy on the mom – weight gain, shifting center of gravity, and ligaments that become loose are all in preparation for the birth process. Unfortunately, these things can wreak havoc on normal spinal alignment and motion.
Ligaments normally meant to stabilize the spine become loose in preparation for the birth process to make natural childbirth easier for the mother. The problem is that ALL ligaments become loose, including the weightbearing ones of the spine. As the baby grows inside, the center of gravity shifts forward and becomes more pronounced with the weight gain. These ligaments are then stressed and stretched – oftentimes beyond what they can handle.
Chiropractic seeks to return biomechanics and motion to normal (within reason) during this stressful process. By doing this, back pain can be decreased and eliminated. A mom under less stress and pain sleeps better, and the baby can grow to it’s fullest within the protection of the womb. It is truly a win-win situation.
There are many types of chiropractic adjustments and your doctor would choose the most appropriate type for your body and where you are in the process of the pregnancy. Women can be adjusted right up until they give birth, and both mothers and infants can be adjusted safely after undergoing the trauma of the birthing process.
So in the end, safe for you, safe for the baby. In fact, beneficial. My own mother was adjusted throughout her pregnancy so I have personal experience from even before I was born. If you are looking for a chiropractor in Corvallis who would see you, don’t be afraid to give us a call. We not only offer pregnancy chiropractic, but massage as well, and we always work in close conjunction with your obstetrician.
Call us. You will be glad that you did.
